What Is SEO? 45 Types of SEO Explained in Plain English

A plain-language guide to search engine optimization: how it works, and what each of the 45 types means for your business.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the work of helping search engines understand your website so they can show it to people who are searching for what you offer. When someone types “dentist in Cuddalore” or “buy running shoes online” into Google, SEO is part of the reason some websites appear and others do not.

You may have seen lists claiming there are 45 types of SEO. Some are core methods that every website needs. Others are niche areas that matter only for certain industries or platforms. This guide explains what SEO is, how it works and what each of the 45 types means, so you can tell which ones your business actually needs.

How search engines work

Search engines do three jobs before they show a result. First, they crawl the web, following links to discover pages. Next, they index what they find, which means storing and organizing the content. Finally, when someone searches, they rank the indexed pages in the order they think is most useful for that search.

Every type of SEO in this guide makes one or more of these steps easier. Your pages should be easy to crawl, clear enough to index properly, relevant enough to rank and appealing enough to earn the click.

Why SEO matters for a business

People search before they buy, book or visit. A page that appears for the right search puts you in front of someone who is already interested. Paid ads can do that too, but they stop when the budget stops. SEO takes longer to build, and nobody can promise a particular ranking, but good work keeps paying off for months and years.

The 45 types of SEO at a glance

The 45 types fall into seven groups. The figure below shows how many types sit in each one. The sections after it explain every type in plain language.

1. Core types of SEO (3)

These three are the foundation. Most other types build on them.

On-page SEO

Everything you control on the page itself: the title, headings, text, images, internal links and web address. The goal is to make each page clearly about one topic that matches what people search for.

Off-page SEO

Signals from outside your website, mainly links from other trustworthy sites, mentions of your brand and customer reviews. They show search engines that other people consider you worth recommending.

Technical SEO

The behind-the-scenes health of your site: loading speed, mobile layout, a secure connection (HTTPS), crawlability, sitemaps and fixing errors. A technically weak site can lose visitors even when the content is good.

The three pillars of SEOOn-page SEO covers your pages, off-page SEO covers what others say about you, and technical SEO covers how well your site runs.On-page SEOWhat is on your pages• Titles and headings• Clear, helpful content• Images and internal linksOff-page SEOWhat others say about you• Links from trusted sites• Mentions of your brand• Genuine customer reviewsTechnical SEOHow well your site runs• Fast loading pages• Mobile-friendly layout• Easy for bots to crawl

2. Technical SEO specialities (2)

These two are parts of technical SEO that deserve their own attention.

Mobile SEO

Making sure your site works well on phones. Google mainly uses the mobile version of a page when it judges it, and many of your visitors will arrive on a phone. Readable text, tap-friendly buttons and fast loading all count.

Accessibility SEO

Designing pages that everyone can use, including people who use screen readers or have low vision. Clear headings, readable colour contrast, descriptions for images (alt text) and keyboard-friendly navigation help people, and they also give search engines clearer signals.

3. Platform-specific SEO (7)

Each platform has its own search system with its own rules. These types adapt SEO to those systems.

E-commerce SEO

Optimizing online store pages: product titles and descriptions, category pages, images, reviews and structured data, so products can appear in search results.

YouTube SEO

Helping videos appear in YouTube search and suggestions through titles, descriptions, chapters, thumbnails and viewer engagement.

Amazon SEO

Improving how your product listings rank inside Amazon’s own search, using keywords, titles, images, pricing, reviews and sales history.

Etsy SEO

Optimizing handmade, vintage or craft listings for Etsy search with the right tags, titles, photos and shop details.

Social media SEO

Making your social profiles and posts easier to find, both inside the platforms and in Google, with clear names, bios, keywords and consistent branding.

Shopify SEO

Getting the most from a Shopify store: clean web addresses, product and collection pages, speed and fixing duplicate pages the platform can create.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Making your content easy for AI tools, such as chat assistants and AI search summaries, to understand and cite. It leans on clear answers, trustworthy sources and well-organized information. This area is new and still changing, so keep your expectations realistic.

4. Local and international SEO (2)

These two decide where your visitors come from.

Local SEO

Helping a business appear for searches tied to a place, mainly through the Google Business Profile, accurate listings, reviews and local content. It suits shops, clinics and service providers that serve customers in a town or region, such as Cuddalore and the towns around it.

International SEO

Helping a site reach people in different countries or languages. It involves language versions of pages, hreflang tags and content written for each country.

5. SEO philosophies (5)

These are not techniques so much as attitudes to SEO.

White hat SEO

Following search engine guidelines and focusing on real value for visitors. It is slower, but it is safe and the results last.

Black hat SEO

Trying to trick search engines with tactics that break their rules, such as hidden text, link schemes or copied content. It can bring quick spikes, but sites caught using it risk heavy penalties or removal from results. We do not use or recommend it.

Grey hat SEO

Methods that sit between acceptable and risky, which guidelines neither clearly allow nor forbid. Their safety can change with any search engine update, so they carry risk.

Holistic SEO

Treating SEO as part of the whole business: website, content, brand, user experience and marketing channels working together instead of isolated tricks.

SXO (Search Experience Optimization)

Combining SEO with user experience, so that people who arrive from search find what they need and take action. Ranking well matters little if visitors leave straight away.

6. Content SEO (5)

Content is what search engines read and what visitors come for.

Landing page SEO

Optimizing pages built for one goal, such as an enquiry or a sign-up, so they attract the right searches and turn visitors into leads.

Blog SEO

Planning articles around questions people ask, then optimizing titles, structure and internal links. Blogs help you appear for more searches and build trust.

Content SEO

Creating and improving content so it answers search intent fully, is accurate and reads well. It covers topic research, writing and updating older pages.

Semantic SEO

Writing about a topic in depth, covering related terms, questions and entities, so search engines understand the meaning behind your content and not only the keywords.

Multimedia SEO

Optimizing images, audio, video and infographics with descriptive file names, alt text, captions, transcripts and sensible file sizes.

7. Specialised and industry SEO (21)

These types apply SEO to particular industries, content formats and methods.

News SEO

For news publishers. Appearing in Google News and Top Stories needs fast publishing, clear headlines, article markup and a site that search engines recognize as a news source.

Enterprise SEO

SEO for very large websites with thousands of pages and many teams. It focuses on process, automation, consistency and clear ownership.

SaaS SEO

For software-as-a-service companies. It targets searches about the problems the software solves, comparisons and features, with sign-ups and demos as the goal.

Podcast SEO

Helping podcast episodes be found through titles, show notes, transcripts and listings on podcast platforms and in search.

Real estate SEO

Helps agents, builders and developers appear for property searches by location, with listing pages, neighbourhood content, photos and local reviews.

Healthcare SEO

For clinics, hospitals and health information. Accuracy and trust matter most. Google applies higher standards to health content, so it should be written or reviewed by qualified people and should never promise outcomes.

Legal SEO

For law firms and advocates: practice-area pages, local presence, reviews and educational content. Professional rules often limit how legal services may be advertised, so check the rules that apply to you.

Automotive SEO

For dealers, workshops and car-related sites: vehicle and service pages, local listings and reviews.

Nonprofit SEO

Helps charities and NGOs reach supporters, volunteers and donors. Eligible organizations may also get support from programmes such as Google Ad Grants.

Political SEO

Helps candidates, parties and campaigns share information about policies and events through search. Rules on election communication vary, so check what applies.

Fashion SEO

For clothing and accessory brands: image optimization, seasonal trends, visual search and product pages.

Travel SEO

For hotels, tour operators and travel guides: destination content, booking pages, reviews and seasonal demand.

Casino SEO

Optimizing websites for online casino and gaming-related searches. It is highly regulated, and what is legal depends on the country or state.

CBD SEO

For products containing cannabidiol. Search and ad platforms limit what can be claimed, and rules differ by country.

Cannabis SEO

For cannabis businesses in places where they are legal. Local laws and platform restrictions shape the content and ads that are allowed. It does not apply where cannabis is illegal.

Gambling SEO

Similar to casino SEO but covers betting, lotteries and related services. Advertising rules are strict, and many regions restrict it.

Dating SEO

For dating apps and matchmaking sites: competitive searches, trust and safety content and careful handling of profiles and reviews.

Affiliate SEO

For sites that earn a commission by recommending other companies’ products. Success depends on honest, useful reviews and clear disclosure of affiliate links.

Programmatic SEO

Creating many pages from one template and a database, such as one page for each city or product. Done with care it scales useful pages. Done carelessly it produces thin, near-identical pages that search engines ignore.

Voice search SEO

Optimizing for spoken questions asked to phones and smart speakers. Answers need to be short, clear and conversational, and local details matter.

Video SEO

Helping videos appear in Google search and video results through titles, descriptions, transcripts, thumbnails and video markup, whether they are hosted on YouTube or on your own site.

If you work in a regulated field such as casino, gambling, CBD or cannabis, check the law and the platform rules first. This guide explains the idea and is not legal advice.

Which types of SEO does a local business need?

Most small and local businesses do not need all 45. A sensible order is to start with on-page, technical, mobile and local SEO, then add content SEO and blog SEO as your time and budget allow. Platform-specific and industry-specific types matter when you sell on those platforms or work in those fields. If you are unsure where to begin, an SEO audit shows what to fix first.

Which types should you avoid?

Avoid black hat SEO. It breaks search engine rules and can lead to penalties that are slow and costly to reverse. Be careful with grey hat methods, and be wary of anyone who promises a specific ranking or a fixed number of visitors. Nobody outside the search engine controls those results.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

SEO earns visibility in the regular search results and takes time to build. Google Ads pays for a place on the results page and stops when you stop paying. Many businesses use both.

How long does SEO take to work?

Expect months rather than weeks. The time depends on your competition, the condition of your site and how much content you need.

Do I need all 45 types of SEO?

No. Most businesses need only a handful. The right ones depend on your industry, your platforms and your goals.

Can I do SEO without a website?

A Google Business Profile can help local customers find you, but a website gives you far more to work with.
